The importance of exercise for Mother's

I can remember as a new mother how a “Mother’s group” was a great support to navigate this new and challenging role.  However, I was lucky enough to have a fitness group as well.  Being able to work out once a week in a group environment with other new mother’s (baby in tow, being looked after by babysitters close by) really helped with my mental well-being.

My go-to class was the boxing class, a great way to get out some of the frustrations I was experiencing. However, it was the ritual of a cup of tea or coffee at the end of the session where we sat down with our babies, swapping ideas and suggestions about motherhood, partners and traversing the return to work.

Now, six years later, my Monday morning workout ritual (with one little one in tow) is still an essential part of my life. I have moved from a group fitness environment to working out with a friend who I made from my mother’s group and mother’s fitness group.

Due to the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic  I am unable to work out with my friend, but it has been great to be able to get active with my children and see other mother’s working out through our “Mummy and Me” workouts on Instagram @toesox.australia.  However, I am sure looking forward to sharing that cup of tea after my workout once isolation is over!
